A pencil storyboard spread from Secret Agent Splat!: small sketched panels of Splat racing to the scene, a sprung trap and paw prints in flour, with the words written alongside and some lines crossed out and rewritten (opens the picture larger in a new tab)
First pass rough sketches for Secret Agent Splat!
Pages 20 to 27 of Rob’s pencil storyboard for Love, Splat: Splat on a bench clutching a little red envelope, Spike reading it, both cats stretching their arms wide to show how much they like Kitten, Spike drawing a giant heart around the playground, and Splat throwing his small card in the bin, with the typed words placed on every page (opens the picture larger in a new tab)
A later pass fuller drawings for Love, Splat

Plan a story like Rob

Rob plans every book in a storyboard, going over it again and again. On a first pass the pictures are quick, rough sketches, with the words pencilled in beside them – including the lines he crossed out and wrote again (Secret Agent Splat!). With each pass the drawings fill out and the words settle into place on the page (Love, Splat). Tap either one to see it bigger.

  1. Fold a sheet of paper into eight boxes.
  2. Plan Splat’s next adventure, one box at a time – a quick sketch is plenty.
  3. Write the words under each box, then read it aloud and change what doesn’t sound right.

Splat in the classroom

Splat’s stories are about first days, friendship and big feelings – perfect for circle time. The I Can Read books are levelled for brand-new readers.
