Rutland, England

Inside Rob’s studio.

Rob paints in a studio in the Rutland countryside, with fields full of sheep and wildlife outside the window. Those same fields gave him his first picture book hero, Russell the Sheep.

How a picture comes together.

  1. one

    Idea & sketch

A story starts as a funny moment, then a rough drawing to find the pose and the joke.

  2. two

    Fur, stroke by stroke

Splat’s scruffy coat is built up stroke by stroke until he looks soft enough to stroke.

  3. three

    Layers

Characters, scenery and props sit on separate layers, so each can be moved and adjusted.

  4. four

    Bring it to life

Those same layers are what make Seymour hop and the birds flap on this website.
